Automania came to Auckland in April 2019. This event was made for car lovers, who want to be in the same room as some more. Indoor car shows, strongman competitions and even drift cars; everything was ready to go for mass entertainment. This event was a good day’s fun and definitely an enjoyable time. There was something for everyone, chili eating competitions to vintage car displays; everyone was accommodated. If you love cars, you had to be there.
This year was nothing less than every year, all of the displays were beautiful and engaging, and the live shows were extravagant and eye-catching. Events of this size always have an individual feel to them; like it’s about something more significant than yourself, you see all of the people that are there for the same reason you are, the love of automobiles. The number of people, the number of displays, the sheer number of cars, shows us the size of this field. This feeling adds an atmosphere to the vent that is very difficult to find at smaller functions.
Automobiles and the auto industry is truly enormous, and this event is a fantastic representation of that. The vintage car displays show us how much this industry has evolved into modern electric Tesla. We sometimes forget that these cars can be and are so much more than we sometimes think they are. “A metal box that takes us from point A to point B,” is the point of view that some people have, and this car show opens your eyes.
We should all go to shows like these; they teach us a lot about the things we use every day. Most of us drive a car to and from work, and yet still don’t know the thinking and effort it takes for the designers, and makers to make it work. They are indeed a unique piece of art, and going to shows like this helps us appreciate it. The purpose to going to a show like this is the same as going to an art museum, to see the thinking, and the result of the brilliant minds, whose work has gradually entered the life of almost every working class family in New Zealand
